Biography of Shane Campbell
Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1964, while his father was stationed in the United States Air Force, Shane's family moved to Tennessee before he was a year old, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Soon after, he married his high school friend, Nancy, and began running a series of shoe stores.
After twenty-one years, the stress of running several small businesses became unsustainable and he and his family moved back home to Tennessee. Shane's father had been a nationally renowned carver, who had passed away several years before their return. Moreover, his father's passion for collecting and selling antiques inspired Shane to do the same.
He restarted selling antiques and carving to pass the time between clients. His wife went back to school and realized the life-long dream of becoming a nurse. Soon after, Shane took a leap and became a full-time artist. He writes: "I believe I found what I was meant to do. My work is steeped in my love for antique American folk art and, in fact, my life. I write many pieces about my life, my hopes, my dreams, my invectives, and even about the people I know. I have found a way to live my life through my art." But as he grew, he suffered from a severe form of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis. At one point the disease prevented him from walking, but thanks to a new medication, he is again able to devote himself to his art. Shane writes: "I keep a positive attitude and I have learned that the secret of life is to enjoy the passing of time."
His iconic textual annotations that cover his sculptures arose on impulse. He writes: "I don’t know why and I can’t explain it except to say that I’m driven to make this art. I no longer have family besides my wife and my children. For me, art is my family. Every time I sell a work, it’s really a small piece of me. There are moments when I can’t work due to arthritis, but when I can work, it’s twenty-four seven. I love the blues and I listen to it while I work. I have a lot of fun creating my art. My only fear is that it might end too soon."
His works are in the permanent collection of several museums, including the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Mennello Folk Art Museum, and the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. They have also been shown in exhibitions at the American Visionary Art Museum. Curriculum: Shane Campbell’s Curriculum
