Description from the seller
Illustrated with a nice folding engraving after Boilly's drawing, depicting animals going about salon occupations in the manner of the Ancien Régime, with the hidden poet who takes notes
1 volume in-12, half basane, marbled edges, 154 pages.
Exterior wear, interior fresh - Pleasant copy.
The Fables of Antoine Vincent Arnault (1766–1834) belong to the tradition of French moral fables.
Arnault, an academic and close to power under Napoleon Bonaparte, wrote these texts at the beginning of the 19th century.
Characteristics of Arnault's Fables
Legacy of Jean de La Fontaine:
Arnault adopts the classic form (animals, short tales, morality), but with a tone that is often more direct and political.
Moral and social dimension:
His fables criticize human flaws (ambition, hypocrisy, injustice) and reflect the tensions of his era.
Style:
Less poetic and image-rich than La Fontaine, but more explicit in morality and sometimes more committed.
Significance
Arnault's Fables are less famous than La Fontaine's, but they attest to the continuity of the genre in the nineteenth century.
They also show how the fable became a tool for political and social reflection after the French Revolution.
