Cartier sterling silver box, 144 g, mid-20th century (1930–1940), with a lid engraved Pobóg coat of arms, signed Cartier on the base, stamped STERLING and maker code I, in good used condition, measures 9 × 10 × 4.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Cartier – sterling silver box – 144 g – mid-20th century
A rare and elegant sterling silver vanity or desk box by the world-renowned jeweler Cartier. This piece features a clean, mid-century modern aesthetic, highlighted by a masterfully engraved lid depicting a Polish noble coat of arms.
The Heraldry:
The lid is engraved with the "Pobóg" coat of arms, one of the most storied heraldic clans of the Polish nobility. It features a downward-facing horseshoe topped with a cross pattée, surmounted by a ducal coronet and a crest of five ostrich feathers. This suggests a bespoke commission for a member of the Polish diaspora or aristocracy.
Construction & Hallmarks:
The box is crafted from solid sterling silver with a high-polish finish.
Signature: Signed in cursive "Cartier" on the base.
Hallmarks: Stamped "STERLING" and the maker’s code "I".
Weight: 144 grams.
Condition:
The item is in very good vintage condition. It shows light, age-appropriate surface scratches and a beautiful natural patina. The hinge is original and functions smoothly. The engraving remains crisp and deep. (See photos for detailed condition).
Why this is a collector’s piece:
Cartier silver items with specific family provenance (heraldry) are highly sought after at auction. This box combines the luxury of the "King of Jewelers" with a unique piece of European history.
