Bronze mirror dating from 1910–1920, measuring 80 cm high by 50 cm wide with an inner opening of 70 by 40 cm, produced in the United States in Rococo revival style, with light age-related wear and stains.
Description from the seller
This mirror is a striking piece that follows the Rococo style (or its revival), characterized by its exuberance and organic shapes.
Here are the main visual and design features:
1. Style and Composition
Deliberate Asymmetry: Unlike the Baroque style, which is more rigid and symmetric, this mirror features curves and ornaments that do not mirror perfectly, creating a dynamic movement.
Rocaille shapes: The term Rococo comes from rocaille (shell/stone). Note the details that resemble sea shells, wave crests, and foliage that seem to “melt” and flow around the frame.
2. Ornamentation (Frame)
Whorls and Acantus: The frame is rich in volutes (spiral shapes) and carved acanthus leaves, giving the piece a deep and complex texture.
Gilded Carving Finish: The frame appears to be carved wood or plaster with a gold leaf finish (or aged golden patina). The visible wear suggests an antique piece or deliberately aged for a vintage/classic look.
Floral Elements: You can observe small buds and branches integrated into the structure, reinforcing the connection to nature.
3. The Glass (Mirror)
Irregular Shape: The glass is not rectangular or oval; it follows the “nervous” contour of the frame, which is a mark of artisanal sophistication.
Time Patina: The mirror shows oxidation spots (the dark specks and the hazy look). In decoration, this is called mercury or aged glass, which adds authenticity and a touch of mystery to the piece.
4. Visual Impact
Focal Point: Thanks to its dramatic design, it is a piece made to be the center of attention. It blends perfectly in purely classical environments as well as in modern spaces (to create contrast) or, as we saw in the previous image, in rustic settings, where the sophisticated gold breaks the roughness of stone and leather.
It is a piece that conveys luxury, history and a very romantic aesthetic.
