Painter and printmaker, Enzo Bellini was born in Santa Sofia (FC) in 1932. From an early age he showed a marked talent for drawing. He began very young under the guidance of the local painter Innocente Biserni, (a good artist not yet fully valued) his first teacher, approaching the world of art. At nineteen he studied for about two years in Turin, under the painters Aloisi and De Caverò, in addition to the academic rules of painting and engraving, and learned advertising drawing and illustration. During that period the city was home to great artists such as Spazapan and Casorati (father), whose charm he forever felt. After several experiences at provincial and regional levels, in the early sixties he decided to move to Milan. Here, in the early years, he worked drawing book and record covers and performing decorations for interior design. He then joined the scenography workshop of the “Piccolo Teatro della Città di Milano” as a painter-creator, where he stayed for over four years. The desire to devote himself completely to painting and drawing convinced him to leave the theater. In 1973 he held his solo exhibition at the La Nuova Sfera Gallery with ink drawings and drypoint etchings, immediately obtaining a flattering critical and public success. The eminent art historian Raffaele De Grada expressed a positive critical judgment and referenced him in the Bolaffi Catalog for graphics. Thus began Enzo Bellini’s artistic adventure. He organized numerous solo exhibitions in prestigious Italian galleries in Milan, Turin, Rome, Florence, Venice, Bologna, Forlì, Ravenna, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara, Mantua, Bergamo, Perugia, Busto Arsizio, Brescia, Aosta, Biella, Vercelli, Susa, Alba, Siena, Trento, Genoa, Santhià, Bagno di Romagna, Rovereto, Treviglio, S. Sofia, Crema, Carmagnola, Cernobbio (CO), Grosseto, Casal Pusterlengo, Marzabotto, Imperia, Lanciano, Giulianova, Benevagenna (CN), Borgosesia; and abroad in Geneva, Bern, Lausanne (Lutry), Bagnes Museum (Valais, Switzerland), Madrid - Las Palmas (Canaries), Helsinki - Wasa (Finland); recently he exhibited in Gran Canaria, in Switzerland, in Rome and in Finland. Some of his works are in the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki and abroad. His production was entirely devoted to expressing with the various techniques he masters, suspended and enchanted atmospheres where the main subjects are the triumph of nature, people, animals and fruits of the earth, set in the luminous countryside of spring and summer, in the clarity of autumn or the quiet of winter snow. Among the “complements” enhancing the works are baskets with elegant interweaving, sheaves, Faenza maiolica and the egg, a symbol of fertility and renewal. Giorgio Celli spoke of him: “Enzo Bellini is one of those painters who make nature, animals, plants, blooming meadows, their dominant models and cultivate the faculty, so to speak, of a Zen-like philosophy, of immersing himself and sinking into the landscape, giving to all that is seen a singular touch of mystery. But this mystery does not lead to the dark latitudes of the unconscious; it is not a mystery endured as a philosopher’s quagmire or man’s incapacity, it is a soothing mystery that, like a spiritual torch, guides us through the many-mirrored labyrinth of the world. While Bellini, painting, places himself on the side of things and everything seems to spin joyfully, like a great metaphysical carousel around him. Some might think he is an hyperrealist, and there is no doubt that his representations of animals and objects are in line with that. But while the hyperrealist, to represent the world, brings it into focus and distances himself from it to see it better, Bellini sees things with an inner eye, he claims them, approaching them ever closer, offering a new vision, the utopia of a naive and purified eye on the world. While hyperrealists, or postmodern figurative painters who have returned to the figurative, have often depicted a world at the edge of disaster and darkness, Bellini’s painting universe is a hymn, a dithyramb to the joy of living. Looking at his paintings is like looking out the windows of happiness.”
