Description from the seller
Vienna Porcelain Wall Plate – Portrait of Josephine Bonaparte – circa 1920
Splendid ornamental porcelain plate, produced by the prestigious Vienna manufactory (Royal Vienna style) around 1920. The plate celebrates neoclassical taste and French imperial iconography through a portrait of great charm.
Central Subject: In the center, within a gilded Greek-key frame, is depicted the portrait of Empress Josephine Bonaparte, wife of Napoleon I. The empress is portrayed with the typical attributes of her position: the imperial tiara, the pearl necklace and the ermine-lined mantle. The name "Josephine" is delicately inscribed at the base of the portrait.
Decoration and Colors: The plate features a pastel green border decorated with intricate arabesques and gold floral motifs. An inner circular band in burgundy creates a regal color contrast, highlighting the central medallion.
Marks: On the back there is the green overglaze mark with the imperial crown and the inscription "VIENNA", together with serial numbers and decorative references hand-drawn in red (visible in the photo).
Conditions
The piece has been restored. As visible from the images, there are signs of intervention on the surface (particularly on the red band and near the edges), necessary to preserve the piece's integrity. Despite the restorations, the plate retains its strong decorative impact and historical charm.
