Description from the seller
"The Monkey Oracle"
Artist: Yaz Borrow (1984)
Mixed media on original engraving from the 1860s from the series "Art for All"
This original work transforms an old engraving depicting statuettes and ancient figures into a contemporary composition centered on a Baoulé monkey figure from Côte d'Ivoire.
The graphical ink interventions and pops of color emphasize the shapes of the original engraving and give birth to a symbolic character: the Monkey Oracle, a figure of observation and wisdom.
The contrast between the 19th-century engraving and the contemporary graphic language creates a dynamic and expressive work.

The artist "Yaz Borro":
Yasmine Borro is an artist born in Abidjan to a Moroccan mother and a Lebanese father, the renowned African art collector Samir Borro. Growing up surrounded by an exceptional collection of African masks and sculptures, she developed from a young age a deep sensitivity to form, symbolism, and visual storytelling.
Her artistic leaning appeared very early. At five years old, she won a drawing competition and was invited to appear on television to discuss her work. As a child, she spent countless hours drawing vases full of flowers and inventing imaginary companions — figures that continue to inhabit the poetic universe of her paintings.
After studying fashion in Brussels and Paris, she collaborated with John Galliano, an experience that refined her aesthetic language and sense of visual narrative. Later, she founded the vintage fashion brand Vintage Story and spent fourteen years living in Beirut, immersed in a dynamic cultural environment.
In 2021, after returning to Brussels, Yasmine Borro rediscovered painting as an essential practice. What began as a personal reconnection soon became the focal point of her artistic work.
Today, her paintings explore memory, imagination, and the emotional landscapes shaped by Africa, travel, and personal renewal.
Through her work, Yasmine Borro invites viewers into intimate worlds where memory, dream, and identity intersect.
