Karl Lagasse, a renowned artist, gained notoriety in 2009 with his sculptures One Dollar, ranking among the top ten sculptors under 30 years old according to Artprice that same year. In 2012, the New York publication Farameh named him as one of the fifty best contemporary artists, inspired by traditional American icons, in its book FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art. More recently, in 2016, at the Art Paris Art Fair, the President of the French Republic warmly congratulated Karl for his impressive two-meter bronze sculpture, One Dollar, exhibited at the Grand Palais.

Karl’s artistic journey began at the age of 7 with collages, spurred by his meeting with sculptor César Baldaccini. He later turned to tagging and graffiti in the Paris metro while remaining passionate about collages. The artist Yvaral Vasarely encouraged him to fuse his tags with his collages. In 2003, Karl prepared his first exhibition in Paris, which led to his first solo show in 2006 at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels. In 2008, he returned to Paris with an exhibition combining paintings, sculptures, and video elements at the Espace Pierre Cardin.

Karl especially enjoys unveiling his works at international exhibitions. In 2011, he was represented by Bel Air Fine Art gallery at the Art Monaco fair with his Cryptogram One. The following year, he presented his One Dollar works on the theme “In God We Trust” at the Artco France gallery. His 2016 solo exhibition at the Atrium gallery in Marbella, Spain, was inaugurated by the mayor, who praised his works in front of the international press.

In 2010, he was chosen to represent Deauville at the Horsemania world championship in Lexington, where he created a horse sculpture dedicated to the event. In 2012, he presented Deauville with his Cryptogram One sculpture, a symbolic bronze of peace and love, located at the city’s entrance. That same year, in collaboration with Corbis, he built a monumental sculpture for the Cannes Festival, using photographs from 1945 to 2011, signed by personalities such as Alexandra Lamy and Matthew McConaughey.

The artist rose to prominence in 2009 with his sculptures “One Dollar,” which earned him a place among Artprice’s top ten sculptors under 30 years old worldwide.

In 2017, he was selected to design the trophies for the 43rd American Film Festival. Drawing inspiration from “Cryptogram One,” he created a forged aluminum trophy with a polished mirror finish, bearing messages such as “Hope,” “7e Art,” and “Deauville” on its four faces. For the 46th edition of the Festival in 2020, Karl Lagasse was commissioned to create a new trophy, inspired by a symbol of Deauville: the drawing of the barriers separating the cabins on the Planches.

In 2016, France Culture mentioned Karl in an article about his monumental installation, A Piece of Heaven on Earth, which combines a Maserati wrapped in white plastic and a Jesus statue surrounded by dollar-shaped sculptures, symbolizing human debt. This work was unveiled at the Art Paris Art Fair 2015 in collaboration with Maserati. In 2017, he created the Deauville American Film Festival Trophy, inspired by his Cryptogram One and adding messages such as “Hope” and “7e Art” on the trophies.
