ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Raúl Martínez (born 1972) is a Spanish abstract painter from Zaragoza, whose work is characterized by an intense exploration of color, matter, and gesture as emotional language. From a very young age he showed an interest in drawing, although it was not until the late 1980s that he began to take an interest in contemporary painting, influenced by artists such as Antoni Tàpies and Mark Rothko.
He trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Barcelona, where he developed a strong inclination toward material abstraction. During his formation years, he experimented with mixed techniques, incorporating sand, fabrics, and natural pigments into his compositions, seeking a physical relationship with the work beyond mere visual appeal.
In the mid-1990s, Martínez began to exhibit in independent galleries in Catalonia, establishing a distinctive style marked by large formats, layered surfaces, and a color palette dominated by earthy and ochre tones. His painting, often described as “internal landscapes,” avoids figurative representation to focus on emotional states and silent tensions.
In the 2000s, his work evolved toward a more gestural abstraction, with energetic brushstrokes and more open compositions, in which the void takes on a leading role. He participated in various contemporary art fairs in Spain and France, and his work began to be included in private collections.
Throughout his career, Raúl Martínez has maintained a stance away from market trends, prioritizing artistic coherence and plastic research. He currently lives and works between Barcelona and the Aragonese Pyrenees, where he continues to develop an introspective body of work deeply tied to nature and the passage of time.
