Antique copper kettle, handmade before machine production (1850–1900), with riveted construction and an iron band around the rim, measuring 43 × 34 × 32.5 cm and weighing 8.5 kg with an authentic patina.
Description from the seller
For sale: a very characteristic and robust antique copper kettle, also known as a copper tub or wood tub. This object bears genuine old craftsmanship and is a perfect addition for a rustic, country or eclectic interior. The tub is made in warm, authentic red copper and has over time developed a splendid patina.
Details and Construction:
This piece is completely handmade. Note the following authentic details:
Construction: The tub is built from several parts that are joined with large copper rivets (rivets) (see detail photos). This is the traditional method from before the era of machine-pushed work. An forged iron band reinforces the upper edge.
Ears & Handle: The ears (the mounting points for the handle) are also forged and attached to the body with rivets. The handle itself is a solid forged iron rod with hook-like ends.
Decoration: A single forged brass or copper band with decorative rivets runs around the middle of the tub, providing both reinforcement and decoration.
Unique Patina: The copper shows its history with a deep, unpolished patina and traces of oxidation, underscoring age and authenticity.
Dimensions (see also photos with measuring tape):
Height: 35 cm.
Diameter: 42.5 cm.
Use:
Originally a practical object for water, coal or laundry, this tub today is perfectly usable as:
Rough wood tub beside the fireplace.
Authentic plant pot for a large houseplant.
Unique storage piece for magazines, towels, etc.
Condition:
The tub is in good antique condition, suitable for its age and the former intensive use. There are no large dents or cracks visible that would endanger functionality. The patina has been intentionally left to preserve the authentic look. The interior is dark from years of use (see photos). See the photos for a full and honest impression.
History of the object
Copper kettles and tubs like these were indispensable in every home in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were the all-round containers of their time. Before we had running water, these tubs stood in the kitchen for water storage. Due to their fire resistance they were also ideal for storing coal and firewood next to the stove.
This specific object is hand-forged, meaning it was made before the large-scale introduction of machine-pressed copper work in the late 19th and early 20th century. The fact that it is a utilitarian object, and not purely decorative brass tub (which often had thinner walls and finer decorations), contributes to its historical value and collectible worth. Its rustic, forged character makes it a timeless piece of heritage.
