Kifwebe - Songye - DR Congo

In this mask, three main stylistic elements dominate the form: a projecting mouth, open, showing teeth in a wide smile; large eye sockets in a high, raised arch, containing elongated eyes with a central groove that accentuates, together with the conical cheekbones, the playfulness of the mask; and a long crest, an extension of the nose. There is a region in Songye territory that prefers the use of large broad-striped areas over many narrow stripes.
