Matthieu Wiegman (1886–1971) was a Dutch painter best known for his still lifes, landscapes and flower arrangements. He was born in Amsterdam and developed into a versatile artist with a strong affinity for traditional painting.
Wiegman was part of the group of artists around the Bergen School, a movement characterized by expressive use of color, bold brushstrokes, and a certain robustness in form. His work shows influences of Expressionism, yet remains rooted in recognizable, figurative subjects.
He lived and worked for a long time in and around Bergen, then an important artist's village where many painters settled. Here he developed his distinctive style, in which atmosphere, light, and composition are central.
His oeuvre consists of:
• Still lifes (such as fruit, tableware and flowers)
• Landscapes (often North Holland dunes and villages)
• Interiors and figure pieces
Wiegman’s work is valued for its warm color use, artisanal quality and timeless appearance. Today he is represented in several Dutch collections and there is lasting interest from collectors in his work.
