Description from the seller
Originating from either Spain or the South of France, this piece of character furniture once served monetary transactions and the keeping of commercial records. Its low, squat silhouette, typical of workshop furniture of the period, rests on a solid pedestal base joined by a particularly sturdy H-shaped stretcher, assembled with visible mortise-and-tenon joints that guarantee secular stability.
The drawer front is the pièce de résistance of this piece. It is adorned with two radiating rosettes sculpted in bas-relief directly in the wood, an emblematic solar motif of the Baroque art symbolizing prosperity.
Security, paramount for a money changer’s desk, is ensured by original wrought-iron hardware. There you can find a central, imposing keyhole and an organically shaped pull ring. Inside the drawer, the mortise-and-tenon locking mechanism remains in place, secured by authentically hand-forged nails and rivets.
The broad overhanging top displays a deep patina and a finish refined by centuries, revealing life marks and the old pegs that give this piece its soul. One can observe a triangular beveling, an ancient and stabilized restoration that attests to the care given to the conservation of this furniture through the ages.
With its generous dimensions (Height 58 cm, Width 104 cm, Depth 55 cm), this money-changer’s desk today beautifully doubles as a monumental coffee table or a grandly prestigious sideboard for a collector’s interior.
This authentic piece is presented in its working condition, with a solid structure despite signs of age.
Given the dimensions, this furniture will be shipped via FedEx (An economically alternative can of course be proposed by the buyer).
