Description from the seller

Soldier - Sculpture - Edo - Africa

An impressive, heavy bronze sculpture that represents a key element of Benin history: a Portuguese soldier. This monumental figure stands a remarkable 53 cm tall and weighs a proud 8.3 kg, underscoring its presence and the quality of the casting.

This sculpture is a detailed and historically significant portrayal of a Portuguese man bearing a musket. The figure is masterfully crafted and shows distinctive features such as the characteristic European hats, the detailed facial features, and the hands holding a musket. The elaborate clothing displays a complex braided pattern and a small, molded lizard figure at the belt—a typical Benin symbol. The facial features differ noticeably from those of the Benin Obas and their courtiers, highlighting the intention of depicting a foreigner.

This portrayal of an armed European (Portuguese) is an important testament to contact and trade relations between the Benin Kingdom and Europe in the 16th century. It is a powerful symbol of that historical era.
