This book is listed in “Magnum Photobook, the catalogue raisonné” by Fred Richtin and Carole Naggar on pages 172-173 (see photo).
“Antoine D'Agata documents what he lives as he lives it, that is, all over the world. He puts on paper ordinary or extreme experiences. The shots are due to the randomness of encounters and situations. The choices, as far as possible, are unconscious. But the obsessions remain the same: the road, fear, darkness, the sexual act. The brutality of form, the exaggeration of vision compel us, more than the images that claim to document, to be interested in the reality of what we see. The viewer can then exist, no longer find themselves in the position of voyeur or consumer, but share an extreme experience, question the state of the world and of themselves." Ice is conceived as an intimate diary from 1999 to today, between snapshots, drug use and sexual acts.
Antoine d’Agata was born in 1961 in Marseille. At 17, he was drawn to punk and anarchist movements. He began frequenting brothels and regularly experimented with various party drugs. In 1983, he left France and traveled for the next ten years. In 1990, he attended photography classes at ICP in New York, where he met Larry Clark and Nan Goldin. From 1991 to 1992, he interned at Magnum Photos’ New York bureau. Between 1999 and 2004, he was represented by Agence Vu. He was awarded the prestigious Niépce Prize in 2001. In 2004 he became a member of Magnum Photos.
