Description from the seller
GENERAL
The Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet (W180 II), produced between 1956 and 1959, is one of the most elegant models of the legendary Ponton series, named after its innovative monocoque body with rounded lines. This 1959 unit represents the pinnacle of post-war German luxury, equipped with the inline six-cylinder engine that offered superior mechanical refinement for its time. The vehicle has undergone a complete “nut and bolt” restoration, using original materials and very high-quality workmanship. The result is a piece that is in identical condition to when it left the dealer 67 years ago, and is one of the best restorations currently available on the classic car market.
CARROCERÍA Y PINTURA
The exterior features an immaculate two-tone finish, applied to the highest standards of quality and respecting the official color combinations of the era. The paint has a deep shine and shows no defect, as the car has not been driven since the restoration was completed. Each trim, chrome detail and exterior element has been treated to recover its original splendor, preserving the sobriety and distinction that characterize the star-brand roadsters.
MECÁNICA
Both the engine and the gearbox have been fully rebuilt and are in the break-in phase. The operation is perfect: the engine sounds as smooth as a unit that is new, and the transmission shifts gears smoothly and precisely. The mechanical system is fully tuned, with all maintenance recently performed, allowing the new owner to embark on trips and participate in classic events with total reliability from day one.
INTERIOR
The cabin is a faithful reproduction of Mercedes-Benz’s original design, using camel-colored leather of the highest quality. The woodwork stands out especially, having been restored through traditional treatments to return them to their new-look appearance, avoiding modern techniques such as hydro-dipping that would detract from the piece’s authenticity. The carpets throughout the interior are new and, due to the car’s virtually zero use since restoration, retain an immaculate look.
DOCUMENTACIÓN
The vehicle originally had Polish license plates, but its registration as a Historic Vehicle in Spain has recently been processed. It is delivered with all documentation in order, facilitating its transfer and immediate enjoyment under Spanish classic-car regulations. The traceability of the restoration and the quality of the materials used support the unit’s patrimonial value.
RECOGIDA
This Mercedes-Benz is safeguarded in Madrid, Spain. Once the lot is awarded, the buyer will have a 20-day free storage period in secure facilities. This time is more than enough to coordinate specialized transport that preserves the car’s current condition until final delivery.
OTRA INFORMACIÓN
The meticulous attention to detail in this unit extends even to the undercarriage, which was completely restored and presents a level of cleanliness and finish comparable to the top side, as if the car had just rolled off the Stuttgart assembly line. It is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet in concours condition, where no expense has been spared to achieve one of the most faithful and high-quality restorations of this model.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
