Description from the seller
Very impressive oak cabinet, dating from the 19th century, possibly with older elements or based on earlier (17th-century) examples.
Beautiful and exceptionally rich and fully hand-carved paneling.
The cabinet is composed of twelve unique figurative panels, something rarely found in this completeness and variation.
The cabinet is made of solid oak and built using traditional techniques (mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-sawn and hand-planed wood). The construction is demountable, with the various parts bearing hand-engraved assembly marks, visible on multiple elements and typical of the original assembly.
A special and rare detail is the presence of a hand-engraved name, “Louis Detivelle,” which is visible on the piece. This inscription contributes to the unique and historical character of the item and may refer to a former owner, maker, or workshop.
The engraved name ‘Louis Detivelle’ may indicate French origin or influence, adding to the historical and characterful whole.
The doors and panels are very uniquely richly decorated with deeply carved reliefs, including medallions with busts, bird motifs and gracefully worked scroll and foliate work. The variation and liveliness in the carving clearly confirm fully manual craftsmanship.
All panels are fully original and consistent in style, execution and aging, indicating that the piece as a whole has been preserved and not assembled from different parts.
Very exceptionally and visually impressive, built from twelve individually carved panels, each with a unique figurative representation in the form of a bust in a medallion.
The carving is characterized by a striking variation in faces, expressions and attributes, including headdresses, helmets and hairstyles, pointing to a deliberate iconographic construction. The panels are framed by richly elaborated ornamentation with laurel wreaths, floral motifs and mythical creatures, including dolphin-like figures and a prominent bird in the upper register.
The composition seems to reference an allegorical representation of man in different life stages and social roles, from youth and beauty to power, wisdom and mortality. This narrative structure, combined with the fact that each panel is unique, makes this piece particularly notable within its type.
The piece shows a beautiful natural patina that has developed over the centuries. Inside there are clear signs of age, such as wear and historical woodworm traces (not active), appropriate to its age. The cabinet was locally reinforced in the past, as is common with furniture of this age, without detracting from its character or appearance. The construction remains sturdy and functional.
Equipped with antique wrought ironwork, including original hinges, key and lock.
An exceptionally decorative and collectible piece of furniture that is both aesthetically and historically very interesting.
A piece of such richly worked and narrative unity rarely comes to market and stands out as a remarkable collectible item within the category of early European furniture.
Shipments to islands or outside Europe on request.
The cabinet will be fully dismantled for shipping. Everything will be securely packed and protected for delivery.
