Description from the seller
Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli — Plona Folding Chair, ca. 1970
A special and rare piece of Italian Space Age design: the iconic Plona folding lounge chair, designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli, Italy, circa 1970.
This example is upholstered in a rare and striking purple/eggplant woolen fabric — far more unusual than the standard acrylic or leather versions commonly on the market. The solid anodized aluminum frame features the distinctive square profile with rounded corners and the ingenious folding hinge mechanism that allows the chair to fold completely flat.
The original manufacturer’s label (IGC Castelli, Divisione Sedie) is still attached to the frame and confirms authenticity.
The Plona is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and is regarded as one of the most important Italian furniture designs of the twentieth century.
Condition:
— Frame: wear and light scratches on the aluminum, appropriate for age and use
— Upholstery: one small blemish visible on the seat, otherwise in good vintage condition
Dimensions:
— Height: 73 cm
— Width: 68 cm
— Depth: 53 cm
— Seat height: 46 cm
— Weight: approximately 6–8 kg
Style: Mid-Century Modern / Space Age
Designer: Giancarlo Piretti
Manufacturer: Anonima Castelli (IGC), Italy
Period: circa 1970
Material: Anodized aluminum, purple woolen fabric
A rare opportunity to own an authentic and unusual example of this celebrated Italian design classic.
