A museum-quality nephrite jade hand-carved object in an archaic Qing dynasty style from the early 19th century, featuring a double-sided relief with entwined zoomorphic figures, measuring 6.3 × 4.8 × 1.9 cm and in very good antique condition.
Description from the seller
Description:
Offered at auction: a museum-quality and extremely detailed hand-carved object, executed in a refined archaic style.
This unique piece is manufactured from a natural stone with a rich, time-worn color palette ranging from deep olive green to warm earthy tones. The carving features a complex zoomorphic design with interlaced chimeras (dragon- or snake-like figures), executed in a refined open-work (pierced) relief.
Origin & Style:
Region: China / East Asia.
Style features: The form directly harkens back to the classical jade traditions of the Han Dynasty. The skilled execution of the symmetrical scroll motifs and the symbolism of the interlaced figures indicate an object of high status, originally intended as a ritual ornament or amulet.
Dating & Age:
Period: Early 19th century (Qing Dynasty).
Context: This object displays authentic characteristics of 19th-century workmanship. The natural patination and the subtle wear at the edges confirm the historical age. Over the years the stone has developed a beautiful, soft fat-luster (mutton fat luster) that is characteristic of antique pieces from this period.
Specifications:
Material: High-quality natural nephrite jade.
Decoration: Hand-carved double-sided relief with archaic motifs.
Condition: Very good antique condition, with a characteristic patina that underscores the age. No restorations visible.
