This unique piece is made from a natural stone with a rich, time-worn color palette that ranges from deep olive green to warm earth tones. The carving displays a complex zoömorphic design with intertwined chimeras (dragon- or snake-like figures), rendered in an elegant openwork (pierced) relief.
Origin & Style:
Region: China / East Asia.
Stylistic features: The form directly harkens back to the classic jade traditions from the Han Dynasty. The skilled execution of the symmetrical scroll motifs and the symbolism of the intertwined figures indicate a high-status object, originally intended as a ritual ornament or amulet.
