The brothers Joseph (June 7, 1876 - 1961) and Pierre (May 15, 1880 - September 7, 1955) MOUGIN, sons of Xavier Mougin, are French ceramicists and sculptors. They both practiced their craft in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
Popularized in the late 19th century, Art Nouveau experienced notable expansion in Europe, and to a lesser extent in the United States. In France, the Universal Exposition of 1900 marks its apex. If René Lalique, Hector Guimard or Samuel Bing constitute undeniable national references, the members of the School of Nancy undoubtedly form the crème de la crème of this movement in France: Emile Gallé, Victor Prouvé, Louis Majorelle, the Daum Brothers at the forefront, but also the brothers Joseph and Pierre Mougin, who did not officially join the School of Nancy, yet accompanied it by participating in its exhibitions and publishing many of its artists.
