Grand Ashanti Prestige Comb (Akan Art, Ghana) – 52 cm
Description :
Traditional prestige comb, a single-piece African sculpture imposing in presence and of great finesse. Originating from West Africa (Ashanti/Akan style), this type of object is not only utilitarian but historically served as a rank insignia or symbolic wedding gift.
Detailed features :
• Origin: West Africa (Ghana / Ivory Coast).
• Material: Solid one-piece wood (carved from a single block) with a beautiful dark satin patina.
• Dimensions: Exceptional height of 52 cm, making it a very visual wall decoration or display piece.
• Iconography: * The upper part presents a complex scene: a human figure lying down supporting a ceremonial boat.
• At the center of the boat, a finely carved head is framed by two curving symbolic elements.
• The handle is adorned with engraved geometric motifs and an interlace symbolizing unity and strength (typical Akan art motifs).
• Number of teeth: 10 sharp and sturdy teeth.
State of conservation :
The object is in good overall presentable condition. Noted is an old (discreet) consolidation at the neck of the central figure, testifying to its authenticity and history. The teeth are intact.
