Indo-Parthian silver bowl, circa late 1st Century BC–early 1st Century AD, with a squat profile, 16.8 cm diameter and 6 cm height, weighing 237.8 g, in very good condition, authenticity original/official, acquired in 2010 from a private UK collection (ex Julian Sherrier collection) with Christie's provenance label.
Description from the seller
A very fine Ancient Indo-Parthian silver bowl. It features a squat profile, with curved walls rising from a gently domed, almost flat circular base. The rim is reinforced with a band of thicker silver, creating a subtle ridge below the mouth. The bowl opens to a wide, circular mouth. Beautiful toning and encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as scratches, indentations, and discolouration.
Following the collapse of Hellenistic rule in 321 BC, the territories of the Achaemenid Empire, which had been divided between the Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt and the Seleucids in West Asia, were inherited by the newly established Parthian Empire. They consolidate their autonomy with the accension of Mithridates I to the Parthian throne, who seized the former Seleucid eastern territories but also added Mesopotamia to the Parthian Empire. Culturally, the Parthian Empire fused together the influences of both the Hellenistic World, but also the Western Asiatic. Local Near Eastern traditions were combined with Greek-Macedonian artistry. The semi-nomadic heritage of the Parthians also greatly influenced the artistic repertoire. Silver bowls such as this beautiful example have been found within the realms of the Parthian Empire, but also into Magna Graecia and Prolemaic Egypt. Their origin, from the repertoire found, was certainly Near Eastern.
Measurements: (circa) W 16.8cm x H 6cm
Weight: 237.8g
Provenance: Acquired from a private UK collection prior to 1979. Ex Julian Sherrier collection, a leading figure in Gandharan art. With Christie's, New York, sale 2337, 14th September 2010, no.51 (part). Accompanied by the original Christie's bar code label to the underside of the bowl.
