Description from the seller
Nigeria
Ifé
African Bronze
Height: 330mm
Width: 265mm
Depth: 20mm
Weight: 2650g
Technique: lost-wax casting (unique piece)
Plaque depicting a king or a horseman warrior. A plaque cast by the lost-wax process, representing most likely a war chief or envoy, and in any case an important dignitary of the royal court, displaying layered necklaces of long coral beads and a necklace of leopard teeth turned outward, attributes characteristic of the Oba's court, reigning (or king) of the former Kingdom of Benin.
Benin art is described as courtly art because it is closely associated with the king, known as the Oba. The tradition of Ifé bronze court objects dates back to the 14th century. These rectangular altars were topped with heads, statues, carved ivory tusks, bells and staffs. They were used to commemorate an Oba and to contact his spirit.
The objects are shipped with a tracking number.
