Description from the seller
An antique carved oak drop-front counter or desk, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The piece is a Secretary Desk, also commonly known as a desk, with a hinged slanted front that drops down to create a writing surface.
Material and finish: The desk is made of dark stained oak, a commonly used material for this style and period.
Carving: The most striking are the intricate relief carvings on the panels of the two large drawers beneath the desk portion, on the stiles (vertical supports) at the corners and along the lower edge. These floral- or scroll-like engravings are indicative of the Jacobean Revival style.
Legs: It sits on characteristic turned legs, consistent with the Jacobean style.
Hardware: The drawers are equipped with round brass handles and keyhole escutcheons. The drop-front also has a central keyhole and brass hardware along the upper edge.
Potential origin/period: The heavy carving and the use of oak suggest English or French provincial origins, probably produced during a revival of earlier styles (Jacobean or Louis XVI Country French) in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Dimensions: h. 90, w. 91 and d. 45 cm
In good condition with signs of wear
