Description from the seller
An antique carved oak drop-front desk, likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The piece is a secretary desk, also commonly known as a bureau, with a hinged slanted front that drops down to create a writing surface.
Material and finish: The desk is made of darkly finished oak, a common material for this style and period.
Wood carving: The most striking feature is the intricate relief engravings on the panels of the two large drawers beneath the desk section, on the styles (vertical supports) at the corners, and along the lower edge. These floral- or scroll-like engravings are indicative of the Jacobean Revival style.
Legs: It stands on characteristic turned legs, consistent with the Jacobean style.
Hardware: The drawers are fitted with round brass pulls and keyholes. The drop-front also has a central keyhole and brass hardware along the top edge.
Potential origin/period: The heavy carving and the use of oak suggest English or French provincial origin, probably produced during a revival of earlier styles (Jacobean or Louis XV Country French) in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Dimensions: h. 90 cm, w. 91 cm, d. 45 cm
Condition: In good condition with signs of use
