Description from the seller

Authentic and elegant ancient mask Dan-Yacouba, Ivory Coast, with striking presence

A remarkable sculptural intensity, between purity of lines and expressive power

Dan-Yacouba mask, Ivory Coast, Montagnes region (Man – Biankouma). Anthropomorphic mask of great formal elegance, belonging to one of the most sought-after stylistic corpora in West Africa.

Of remarkable sobriety, this mask is distinguished by the perfect balance of its volumes and the mastery of its construction. The face, ovoid and taut, is structured by a marked central nasal ridge that divides the composition with authority. The narrow eyes, in fine horizontal slits, confer the gaze with a contained, almost inward intensity, typical of the most refined Dan masks.

The mouth, half-open and powerfully modeled, introduces a subtle expressive tension, between restraint and presence. It gives the face a living dimension, almost inhabited, reinforcing the embodied character of the piece.

The surface has a deep, glossy patina, in brown and black tones, revealing long and repeated use. The wear areas, gently smoothed, testify to prolonged ritual handling. This patina, uniform and dense, fully contributes to the aesthetic quality of the work.

The purity of the lines, the reduction of forms to the essential, and the quiet strength that emanates from this mask resonate clearly with the explorations of European avant-gardes. As with certain 20th-century sculptors, the simplification of volumes does not diminish power; it concentrates it. This Dan-Yacouba mask thus sits among the forms that deeply influenced modern perception of sculpture.

In its original context, this mask was used during social and initiation performances, embodying spirits or specific roles within the community. Worn, animated, it became a full-fledged actor, revealing its full dimension in movement and dance.

Provenance: private Swiss collection.
