Mask, Gouro culture, Ivory Coast. H.37cm

Magnificent Gouro mask from Ivory Coast. The face is elegant and gentle. The gaze is deep and mysterious. It seems to look beyond time. This is a work that exudes a great deal of sensitivity. The sculpture is fine; it is the work of a seasoned artist. It is covered with black paint with added white and orange pigments. Feathers were pinned to the top of the mask; the holes for inserting them are visible. There remains also a portion of animal skin. Fabrics concealing the wearer completed this mask. The whole is superb and harmonious. It is a classic and timeless work. The face reminds me of the sculptures of Amedeo Modigliani.

Superbe masque Gouro de Côte d'Ivoire. Le visage est élégant et doux. Le regard est profond et mystérieux. Il semble regarder au delà du temps. C'est une oeuvre dont il se dégage beaucoup de sensibilité. La sculpture est fine, c'est l'oeuvre d'un artiste aguerri. Il est recouvert de peinture noire avec un ajout de pigments blanc et orange. Des plumes étaient fichées en haut du masque, les trous permettant de les insérer sont visibles. Il reste aussi une partie de peau animal. Des tissus cachant le porteur complétaient ce masque. L'ensemble est superbe et harmonieux. C'est une oeuvre classique et intemporel. Le visage me fait penser aux sculptures de Amedeo Modigliani.
