Description from the seller
Impressive pure silk king-size bedspread from the late 1800s to early 1900s in the Louis-Philippe style.
Given its large dimensions, it consists of two silk panels sewn together on the inside, so only a central seam is visible, but it does not diminish its beauty. They were sewn so well that the embroidery and designs align perfectly. A detail that one notices only when approaching closely. Historically, it was common to sew fabrics for different uses, differentiating them.
As for color, the background is light blue while the embroidered designs are gold. It is all embroidery, with circles worked with outer lines to enrich it, and in the center a flower. Below are embroidered as if leaves of a weeping willow. It is all a geometric pattern with these designs placed asymmetrically, one up high and one down low. It is not classic damask, but embroidery with designs arranged as if a tapestry. This workmanship continues on the two side parts and at the foot of the bed.
It is of generous proportions, precisely because old beds were higher; indeed, in my bed, which, although from the 1700s, has modern slats that reach the floor. It measures 246 cm in length and 255 cm in width, to which a 14 cm fringe is added, so it fits a bed perfectly. A straight, simple fringe that echoes the colors of the bedspread. It was made for me by my family specifically for the beauty of the colors and the type of silk, but it is evident it has been used very little because the silk is in excellent condition as is the fringe. They used to have a lot of linens made in anticipation of dowries, and given the large number of bed covers of various fabrics and colors, I found many never used. The fact that it has two small, typical “casket” stains, which I photographed, shows its age and proves that this is an antique bedspread, but they do not detract from its beauty. A high-quality aspect is the pure silk used.
I therefore wrote “good condition” precisely for these two stains; otherwise it is in excellent condition.
My ancestors valued the home greatly and loved renewing the drapes, always having linens made that expressed beauty and refinement. It is of generous measurements, including the fringe, because as I have already written, old beds were taller, so it fits a bed perfectly down to the floor.
It is part of the dowry I inherited, and given the large number of bed covers in various fabrics and colors, I am selling many so they can have a new life. Given its ample dimensions, I have even used it as a sofa cover, because of the beauty of its colors, and as a tablecloth under a wall-adjacent table, reaching to the floor, with a white embroidered cloth on top to showcase the designs.
It easily matches the colors, fabrics, and drapes of a home. Beautiful to use on an antique bed to highlight its importance, but also stands out on a simple modern bed. In fact, it would add a touch of elegance and refinement. It blends easily with both classic and modern furnishings. When an object is beautiful, one always finds a use for it. One only needs imagination and to love, above all, the interior design of the home in which one lives. Each home reflects the taste and refinement of its inhabitants. Whoever buys it will decide what use to make of it.
I ship with a private courier rather than the post office, to arrive sooner and to have double packaging, and for simpler communication.
Given its measurements, the bedspread will be shipped wrapped in thousands of bubbles and placed in a box to offer greater protection.
Shipping costs vary depending on whether it is Europe, in a first or second tier (e.g., United Kingdom, Switzerland, Eastern European countries) or third tier (e.g., Norway, Malta, Cyprus) and rest of the world.
Customs duties will be borne by the buyer.
