Pair of Queen Anne style sterling silver candlesticks by James Dixon & Sons (Sheffield), dating to around 1909, with a stepped square base, shell decorations at the corners, and flower or acanthus-form candle cups, measuring 23.5 × 11 × 11 cm and weighing 592 g in total, in good condition with minor signs of age and stains.
Description from the seller
Pair of candelabras in Queen Anne style, produced in sterling silver by the renowned James Dixon & Sons firm. D & S is the maker's mark. In this case it belongs to James Dixon & Sons, one of the most important and historic Sheffield producers. These candelabras feature the typical square, mislinear base with shell decorations at the corners, a classic style highly appreciated in the Edwardian period (early 1900s). The base is a stepped type with a broken-line profile. The stylized shell decoration on the corners is a classic ornamental element that gives movement and reflects light in a particular way. The upper parts where the candle is inserted are shaped “flower” or acanthus leaf, with a flare that serves both as an aesthetic element and function to collect any dripped wax.
The crown is the mark of the city of Sheffield. The crown was used by the Sheffield Assay Office for silver until 1974.
The lion passant indicates that the object is sterling silver, with a guaranteed fineness of at least 925/1000.
The letter "R" is the date mark that indicates the exact year in which the silver was tested and hallmarked. Based on the style of the letter (uppercase in a specific shield) for the Sheffield office, this corresponds to the year 1909.
The lot will be carefully packed and shipped with approved couriers and online tracking.
