Description from the seller
Private Parisian Collection
Wakemia Spoons of the Dan: Ritual Objects and Symbols of Sacred Sharing
Among the Dan, established in Ivory Coast and Liberia, the Wakemia spoons transcend their utilitarian function to become ritual objects charged with meaning. Carved from hard wood, often adorned with geometric patterns or stylized figures, these spoons were used during initiation ceremonies and communal meals.
Their elongated shape and decoration symbolize abundance, the transmission of knowledge, and the unity of the group. The etched motifs, such as faces or animals, refer to mythic narratives or moral values. In serving food, the Wakemia spoon recalls that sharing is a sacred act, binding the living to the ancestors.
These objects reveal a cosmology where art and daily life unite to celebrate social cohesion.
