Description from the seller

UV checked !

Flared-rim bowl titled "Beauties"
China, Qing Dynasty
19th century
Hard-paste porcelain decorated with Famille Verte enamels
9.5 cm high x 28.5 cm diameter

Circular bowl with a deep profile flaring to a wide lip (flat rim). The interior decoration is centered on a refined genre scene, surrounded on the rim by a frieze alternating floral branches and insects (dragonflies). The exterior wall is simply adorned with stylized bamboo shoots, drawn with a vivid iron-red line.

The main scene illustrates the classic theme of the "Beauty" (Meiren). A young woman is depicted in an interior opening onto a garden, leaning against a scholar's table. A censer or a seal-box can be seen, as well as a vase containing a lotus or peony flower, symbolizing purity and nobility. The drum-shaped seat and the screen decorated with rocaille motifs (to the left) emphasize the scene’s belonging to imperial or mandarin high society.

This piece illustrates the 19th-century taste for literary and poetic scenes inspired by the learned feminine world, rendered softly in the refined palette of the Famille Rose.

Condition: UV checked - restoration at the edge.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection - Portugal
