Wiener bronze table bell in cold-painted bronze, dating to ca. 1850–1900, with a finely worked monkey on a naturalistic branch, height 15.5 cm, width 9.5 cm, depth 6.5 cm, origin Vienna, Austria; in good condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
An exceptionally charming Viennese bronze from the late 19th or early 20th century, in the form of a finely crafted table bell with a three-dimensionally realized monkey perched on a realistically designed branch.
INFO: Brand - “protected” - see detail photos!
The figure captivates with its lively modeling and the masterfully executed cold-painting typical of Viennese bronzes. Noteworthy is the differentiated surface treatment: delicate chiseling in the fur, combined with nuanced color patches in warm brown and red tones, lending the depiction remarkable depth and expressiveness.
The monkey — a classic motif of Viennese small bronzes — subtly symbolizes playfulness, curiosity, and, at times, the mirror of human traits. In conjunction with the functional form of the table bell, it becomes an object of particular appeal, elegantly uniting art and everyday life.
The age-related patina as well as slight wear to the polychromy are to be understood as authentic testimonies of the era and underscore the originality of this piece.
A decorative and at the same time collectible object that strikingly reflects the high craftsmanship of Viennese bronze art around 1900.
