AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Complete game set: Chess table with integrated chessboard and a pair of Savonarola chairs in solid walnut - Italian craftsmanship, 20th century.

Column Table, removable swiveling chessboard, checkers, Antique pedestal, column side table

Material:
Solid wood, with rich patina of time, Ideal to confer superior elegance to the piece.
Swivel and removable gaming table (tray with screw). Elevatable game table (chess/checkers side in mirrored polished wood).

Handmade in mid-20th century in Italy.
This exquisite chess set is a must for any collector or enthusiast.

The armrests are deliciously carved in the shape of a face and Lion Head.

The whole piece is made of solid wood
Purchased from a private collection.

The chess set is an Italian artisanal production from the 1970s, made in turned wood and pyrographed decoration.

The style is Regency (for the elongated forms and collars) and the design "Selene". The crowns of the King and Queen are pierced and decorated with small contrasting spherical knobs, a typical touch of Italian artistic craftsmanship of that period (from Val Gardena and Tuscan workshops).

• The Technique: The dark lines on the light pieces (especially on the towers and at the base of the pawns) are not painted, but created with pyrography (burned incisions).

• Materials: The dark pieces are made of synthetic ebony and walnut-stained boxwood, while the light pieces are natural boxwood and maple.

Complete set of all 32 pieces, original red velvet box.

Foldable, book-like, and hand-carved by Italian craftsman carpenters.

“Brief Historical Note”:
The term Savonarola derives from the name Girolamo Savonarola (1452 - 1498), during whose time this type of chair was still preserved in his cell near the convent of San Marco in Florence, where he lived from 1482 until his death.

Savonarola chairs, also called Dante chairs, are iconic furniture with deep historical roots dating back to the Renaissance. The name derives from Girolamo Savonarola, a famous Italian monk and reformer of the 15th century, although the chairs were used even earlier, already in ancient Rome.

Savonarola chairs are characterized by a unique and foldable design. They have crossed legs forming a distinctive “X” shape.

Despite their historical form, Savonarola chairs are designed to offer comfort.

These chairs will be perfect as decorative elements in living rooms, offices, or libraries.

They can be used as accent chairs that add character and historical atmosphere to interiors.
