Description from the seller
Antique French fan in Louis XV style. In silk, mother-of-pearl, silver, and gold leaf. Dated 1850–1870. It preserves its original case, made of white silk and velvet.
Display piece of high French craftsmanship, produced during the mid-19th century under the aesthetic of the Louis XV style (Rococo Revival). This fan represents the sophistication of the Paris workshops, combining the delicacy of silk with the mastery of work in mother-of-pearl.
The Silk (Tela): Made in natural silk, it features a gallant 18th-century scene, characteristic of Watteau or Fragonard paintings. The lithograph is exquisitely hand-illuminated, surrounded by rocaille borders and relief golden floral motifs that enhance the silk’s sheen.
The Framework (El Varillaje): A first-rate technical display in high-quality mother-of-pearl. The rods are meticulously pierced and engraved, showing a central medallion that pays homage to the eighteenth-century courts. Applications of gold and silver leaf on the mother-of-pearl create an exceptional play of light with movement.
The piece is preserved in very notable condition. The mother-of-pearl retains its integrity and iridescent shine, while the silk preserves the vividness of its original pigments. It shows a break in one of the rods, which has detached from the silk; see images.
