Description from the seller
Old icon representing a triumphant saint rider – late 18th / early 19th century - Spain
Icon painted in tempera on a wooden panel, depicting a saint mounted on a horse holding a red banner, advancing in a scene of victory.
The composition shows in the foreground a figure lying on the ground, probably a vanquished enemy, giving the whole an iconography of a protective or warrior saint.
The rider, dressed in a dark habit cinched with red, is mounted on a light-colored horse with harnesses highlighted with red pigments. A cross appears in the background, reinforcing the religious character of the scene.
In terms of style, its free proportions and its popular treatment, the work belongs to a devotional production of southern influence, possibly Iberian, evoking representations of Saint James Matamoros or an analogous military saint.
