Description from the seller

Russian icon of Saint Nicholas with an embossed silver oklad and gilding, hallmarked – Moscow, 1883

Small portable icon representing Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, blessing with the right hand and holding the open Gospel in the left. The painting is executed in tempera on panel, protected by an oklad (cover) in repoussé and chased silver, with a pierced gold halo.

In the upper corners appear Christ blessing and the Mother of God, holding the Gospel and the omophorion, in accordance with traditional iconography.

The silver covering bears several clearly legible marks on the lower edge:
• “84”: Russian title guaranteeing silver at 875/1000, in use in the Russian Empire.
• City hallmark: Moscow (Saint George slaying the dragon, visible).
• Date letter: 1883.
• Master-goldsmith hallmark: “А.С.” (A.S.), probably identified with a Moscow goldsmith active in the late 19th century.
• Assay mark: stamped by the testing workshop, confirming authenticity and silver content.

Refined workmanship, with a decorative engraving of geometric and floral motifs. The pierced golden nimbus highlights the figure of Saint Nicholas, lending a beautiful luminous presence.
• Origin: Russia, Moscow.
• Period: dated 1883.
• Technique: tempera on panel, silver oklad (875/1000) partially gilded.
• Dimensions: approximately [to be measured, likely 15 × 12 cm].

Condition: wear and small alterations to the painting visible on the flesh tones, argentum patinated, hallmarks perfectly legible.
Photos are an integral part of the item description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any bidding.

The item will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
