Argus C3 35mm rangefinder camera, tested and working, in very good condition, dating from the 1930s.
Description from the seller
- Brief description: Iconic Argus C3 35mm rangefinder camera, famously known as "The Brick" due to its rugged, rectangular design. This legendary American camera was produced between 1939 and 1966 and is a staple for any vintage photography collection. It features the classic Cintar 50mm f/3.5 coated lens and a coupled rangefinder. A true piece of photographic history, famously used by war photographers and even featured in the Harry Potter films.
-------------------------------------------------------
- A Monolith of Americana: The "Detroit Modernism" Argus C3 Own a unique piece of photographic and architectural history. This is a bespoke artistic restoration of the legendary Argus C3, the camera that captured 20th-century America, now reimagined through a lens of sophisticated, "Deco-Industrial" elegance.
The Vision & Design: "The American Century" This restoration is inspired by the bold, unapologetic geometry of 1940s American Industrial Design. The Argus C3, affectionately known as "The Brick," is a celebration of tectonic form. While its structure is utilitarian, this edition elevates it to a sculptural icon. After studying the graphic language of Mid-Century modernism, I selected a complex, stylized motif that harmonizes with the camera’s powerful blocky architecture—a design I call "Industrial Art Deco." The pattern creates a fascinating play of light across the camera's uncompromising rectangular surfaces, transforming a rugged tool into a work of art.
The "Florence Method" Craftsmanship Restored by a professional with 20 years of experience in high-end antique restoration in Florence, Italy, this camera is a testament to heritage revamping and part of a limited series of 20 customized vintage icons.
Total Preparation: Full removal of the original vulcanite. Unlike many C3s, this camera underwent a significant disassembly (including the specific Cintar lens and rangefinder gears) to ensure a flawless chassis foundation.
Material Innovation: Moving beyond standard vinyl, I utilized a specialized, high-grade substrate. This material offers a rich, matte finish and a superior, sophisticated tactile "grip."
Hydrophobic Treatment: The decorated surface has been treated with an advanced transparent barrier, making it resistant to water, oily substances, fingerprints, and environmental stress (abrasion/tears). Every piece is hand-fitted with the accuracy of a master restorer.
Mechanical & Optical Condition
Tested & Fully Operational: This is not just a shelf queen; it is a fully functional photographic tool. The rugged, behind-the-lens shutter fires accurately.
Classic Rangefinder: The coupled rangefinder has been checked for accuracy.
Optics: The iconic Cintar 50mm f/3.5 lens is clean and clear. No haze, no fungus. Ready for your next roll of 35mm film.
Why this Argus C3? The Argus C3 is a symbol of American resilience and mass photography, but this Materia Analogica edition transforms its "honest brick" shape into a luxurious historical artifact. It is the perfect bridge between rugged 1940s American engineering and the world-renowned excellence of contemporary Florentine restoration art.
"Each camera includes a signed Condition Report & Certificate of Restoration from my Florence-based studio, detailing the aesthetic and mechanical work performed."
