AUCTION DESCRIPTION:
Historical classification
This finely crafted bronze figure comes from Tibet and is to be assigned to the Sino-Tibetan stylistic circle. It unites Tibetan Buddhist iconography with the highly developed Chinese bronze casting tradition of this era.
Iconography & design:
Shown is Shakyamuni Buddha in the classic Bhumisparsha Mudra, the gesture of earth contact at the moment of enlightenment. The figure sits on a double-tiered lotus throne, a central symbol of Buddhist purity.
The robe design is finely modeled and throughout the surface adorned with floral ornaments. The careful workmanship continues on the back, indicating high-quality workshop craft.
The face is calm and meditative, with balanced proportions and a clearly contemplative aura.
Material & technique:
The figure was produced in the traditional lost-wax casting process as a solid bronze cast.
The surface displays a deep dark, organically grown age patina, giving the object a quiet material depth. The weight of about 2.1 kg at a height of 25 cm indicates a particularly massive cast.
Inside, remnants of the traditional casting core (clay/soot mixture) are visible, as is typical for classic historical bronze casting methods.
Dimensions
Height: approx. 25 cm
Base width: approx. 13.5 cm
Weight: approx. 2,105 g
Condition:
Very good, collector-worthy condition with authentic, naturally grown patina. No signs of modern retouching or sealing. The original character of the casting is fully preserved.
Overall impression
A harmoniously proportioned and expressive representation of Shakyamuni Buddha in the Sino-Tibetan tradition. The combination of calm presence, fine ornamentation, and massive bronze casting gives the figure a strong collecting and aesthetic impact.
