A characterful side table from around 1920, executed in the style of the Amsterdam School. This furniture reflects the expressive formal language this movement is known for: bold lines, geometric shapes, and a clear emphasis on craft.
The octagonal top is richly inlaid with veneer in a geometric pattern. This gives the table a lively and decorative character, without looking busy. The warm tones of the wood and the subtle contrast in the veneer create a beautiful sense of depth.
The construction is typical of the Amsterdam School. Sturdy, straight-edged legs and a solid lower shelf that is practical as well as aesthetic. This lower shelf offers extra space for books or objects and reinforces the architectural look of the whole.
The Amsterdam School originated in the Netherlands around 1910 and peaked in the 1920s. In addition to architecture, furniture was designed as well, often with a focus on artisanal woodwork and expressive forms. This table fits seamlessly with that heritage.
The table is in good antique condition. The top is missing a small piece of veneer, visible in the photos. This is in keeping with its age and does not affect stability or use.
