Fine marquetry writing box / slope desk – inlaid wood – 19th century
Elegant 19th-century writing box (slope desk), finely crafted in wood with geometric marquetry decoration.
The lid is inlaid with a striking chequered and diamond-pattern veneer, centred by an oval reserve, framed by a dark border. The interior opens to reveal a green felt writing surface, surrounded by compartments and a small drawer, typical of refined writing boxes of the period.
The upper section features an additional raised compartment with two drawers, fitted with turned knobs, adding both functionality and decorative appeal. The sides are enhanced with applied mounts, contributing to the overall richness of the design.
The craftsmanship and choice of veneers demonstrate careful execution, making this both a practical writing piece and an attractive decorative object.
Condition: good overall condition, with age-related wear, small marks, and patina consistent with use; interior fabric with signs of use
