Description from the seller
39 cm with base
The Ekuk mask of the Kwele (Congo, Gabon, Cameroon) stands out for its geometric, elongated form, often evoking a monkey-like face or a fantastical creature with pared-down features. Unlike naturalistic masks, the Ekuk favors a stylized abstraction, with a prominent forehead and almond-shaped eyes, symbolizing vital force and the link to the world of the ancestors.
Used during initiation ceremonies and rites of passage, this mask embodies the figure of the “man-monkey,” representing both the wildness to be tamed and ancestral wisdom. Its manufacture, often associated with secret societies, involves materials such as wood, red ochre, and plant fibers.
Today, the Ekuk is internationally recognized as a masterpiece of African abstract art, though its exact interpretation varies according to the Kwele sub-groups and the historical contexts of its collection.
