Picenian Bronze Janus Bull - Very Rare!
Circa 7thcentury BC
This cast bronze figurine depicts a Janus bull, consisting of two front halves of bull bodies joined together, facing opposite directions. Each half features pointed snouts, short horns, slender bodies, and bent legs.
The Picenian people were an ancient Italic tribe who inhabited the central-eastern region of the Italian peninsula, known as Picenum, during the Iron Age and classical antiquity. Picenum, the homeland of the Picenians, encompassed parts of present-day Marche and Abruzzo regions in Italy, along the Adriatic coast. The region was characterized by a diverse landscape of coastal plains, hills, and mountains, providing favourable conditions for agriculture, pastoralism, and trade.
