Description from the seller
Antique mother-of-pearl case (ca. 1870–1920), over 100 years old, Asian sewing/needle box, decorative collectible
An object over 100 years old from a time when personal items were not only functional but also expressions of style and value.
This finely crafted case likely comes from the Asian region (most probably China) and can be placed in the period between ca. 1870 and 1920. It belongs to an era in which artfully decorated everyday objects were regarded as small luxuries, comparable to the high-end accessories of our time.
The surface is entirely covered with shimmering mother-of-pearl inlay. This material, derived from seashells, has been used for centuries for particularly decorative and valuable objects. The vibrant play of color in the light underscores the prestigious character such pieces once had.
An case of this kind was not a simple utilitarian object, but a personal accessory, similar to today’s high-end branded product that one carries with intention. It combined practicality and aesthetic appeal in a compact form.
The interior is lined with fabric and suggests its original use as a sewing- or needle-case. The construction allows fine needles to be stored securely and yet easily accessed—an intentional detail from a time when handcraft was part of everyday life.
Today, function is no longer the primary focus, but the historical and decorative value. The case is a small piece of lived history, an object that reflects the shift from practical possession to a stylish collectible.
Condition:
Age-related signs of wear, slight irregularities in the mother-of-pearl, and patina authentic for an object of this age and part of its charm.
Dimensions:
Length approx. 8.9 cm
Width approx. 5.5 cm
Depth approx. 1.1 cm
A piece over a century old, discreet, elegant, and with history.
