Description
In this Surreal Metamorphosis from 2005, Robert Detheux pushes his exploration of the body as a site of organic mutation even further. Shown in three-quarter rear view, a powerful female figure with sculptural shoulders and hips seems caught in a radical transformation: the lower body and the arms dissolve into bulbous and rooting forms, like living tubers or rhizomes that stretch and entwine in space.
The line, both nerve-wracking and sensuous, models with exceptional virtuosity the back musculature and the flesh that becomes vegetal matter. The white highlights unleash a lunar-like light on the volumes, while subtle touches of blue emphasize the veins and veins of this troubling hybridization. The patinated background, rich in textures and fine scratching, reinforces the impression of a creature in full metamorphosis, halfway between human and plant kingdom – both fleshy, fragile, and eternal.
An emblematic work of the Surreal Metamorphoses series, it embodies Detheux’s deep, organic poetry: the body is no longer a fixed form but a place of dreams, a return to the earth and fusion with primordial nature.
Condition: Excellent overall. Variations in texture, scratching and irregularities of the support are entirely intentional and an integral part of the artist’s process. No restoration or alteration.
Provenance: Private collection (work directly from the artist’s studio).
Artist biography
Born in Brussels in 1932 and deceased in 2010, Robert Detheux is a singular and exacting figure in post-war Belgian art. Close to surrealist and Dadaist currents while developing a deeply personal language, he built an introspective body of work where the body, the face and matter become dreamlike territories for questioning. His drawings from the 2000s, including this Surreal Metamorphoses series, are particularly sought after for their technical subtleties and evocative power.
A very beautiful collecting piece, representative of Detheux’s poetic and organic maturity. Perfect for connoisseurs of Belgian surrealist art and contemporary drawing with high sensitivity.
