Description from the seller

Very beautiful Kpan Baoulé mask – Côte d’Ivoire

Culture : Baule (Baoulé)
Country : Côte d’Ivoire
Name : Face mask
Ethnic name : Kpan

Refined and very elegant Baoulé Kpan mask, finely carved in dense wood with a superb patina, revealing the full artistic mastery of Baoulé sculptors from Côte d’Ivoire. This type of mask ranks among the most refined expressions of West African classical art, appreciated for the balance of its volumes, the delicacy of its lines, and its deep aesthetic force.

The face, elongated and perfectly balanced, presents sober and powerful features at once. The half-closed eyes, typical of Baoulé aesthetics, express calm, self-control, and spiritual interiority. The straight and slender nose harmoniously extends the central line of the face, while the discreet mouth enhances this impression of noble and silent serenity.

The central-lobed coiffure, admirably worked, gives the mask a sculptural presence particularly elegant. The striped disc that crowns the head creates a remarkable graphic play and reinforces the overall verticality. The scarified cheloids on the forehead as well as the fine triangular marks on the cheeks bear witness to the traditional aesthetic and identity codes of the Baoulé peoples, where beauty, status and spirituality were intimately linked.

The hollowed rear of the mask shows a beautiful antiquity of use as well as a deep inner patina, while the outer surface presents a warm and silky luster obtained through time, handling, and successive ritual applications. This ancient patina, in deep brown-black nuances, magnificently emphasizes the facial reliefs and reveals the quality of the wood used.

Artistic and cultural significance

Baoulé masks Kpan occupied an important place in ceremonies and traditional Baoulé dances. Beyond their ritual function, they embody a particularly advanced aesthetic pursuit, characteristic of Baoulé art, often considered one of the peaks of classical African sculpture.

The refinement of this mask recalls why the arts of Côte d’Ivoire deeply impressed the great artists and collectors of the 20th century. Through the purity of its forms and the sophistication of its composition, this work sits within the tradition of objects capable of dialoguing just as well with ancient art as with the most demanding contemporary interiors.

An authentic, harmonious and decorative piece, combining formal beauty, sculptural presence, and true antiquity.

Provenance: former French private collection.
