Beautiful sculpture depicting the head of Emperor Marcus Aurelius of the second century AD.
Artwork made using ancient sculptural techniques in Carrara marble powder.
The work was found in the ancient Roman city of Tarraco (Tarragona, today in Spain).
This bust represents the emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius.
Succesor of Antoninus Pius, he culminated the so-called Golden Age of the Roman Empire, in office from 161-180 AD.
His philosophical and historical education allowed him to confront a difficult realm, marked by invasions, epidemics, and the betrayals of his generals.
He implemented administrative reforms to benefit the most needy sectors of society.
During the harsh military campaigns, he wrote his philosophical work in Greek, “Meditations.”
The original piece is preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, Spain, in the ancient Roman city.
The indicated dimensions are inclusive of the base, where present.
