Description from the seller
Very old Berber necklace – Southern Atlas Moroccan (circa 1890–1910)
Weight: 980 g
Length: 79 cm
Stunning and imposing traditional antique necklace from the southern Moroccan region, composed of large handmade beads in natural vegetable resin. This resin comes from the Boswellia tree, an acacia used at the time in Berber necklace making. The beads display a magnificent ancient patina with warm hues ranging from golden yellow to deep amber.
The central cylinder, in very rare black wood, is finely inlaid with copper and silver wires hammered directly into the wood.
One of the hanging pieces bears an engraved date corresponding to 1188 AH, i.e. 1775 in our Gregorian calendar, testifying to the antiquity and transmission of this jewel through generations.
An exceptional piece, authentic, unrestored, simply cleaned with pure water to preserve its original material.
Shows some wear typical of its age, but in very good overall condition.
This necklace tells a part of the history and traditions of the desert Berber people.
A unique collector's item.
