Impressive neo-Renaissance Italian walnut solid-wood open bookcase, dating from circa 1850–1900, 178 cm high, 140 cm wide, 50 cm deep, in good used condition with minor age-related marks.
Description from the seller
Important and refined console cabinet in solid walnut wood, made around the late 19th to early 20th century by the renowned cabinetmaking firm "Guglielmo Cau e Fratelli" of Cagliari. Cau was one of the leading expressions of artisanal excellence in Sardinia, celebrated for the superior quality of the woods and the mastery of architectural carving.
The piece presents an imposing and rigorous structure, inspired by the canons of Italian Renaissance (Umbertine Style). The richness of the hand-carved details makes it a high-representation piece, ideal for notarial offices, classical libraries, or prestigious salons.
Artistic and construction details:
• Cima e fregio: The upper part is dominated by a dentellated frame that surmounts a richly carved frieze with foliate scrolls, floral motifs, and a central cartouche in a shield.
• Lesene e capitelli: The vertical supports are composed of fluted pilasters ending in finely carved Corinthian capitals with volutes and acanthus leaves.
• Basamento e piedi: The piece rests on a fluted base supported by spectacular lion (or similar) paw feet, carved with great plastic vigor and realism.
• Sistema a cremagliera: Internally, the bookcase features the classic wooden ladder system (cremagrire in legno). The shelves are height-adjustable thanks to the original supporting slats, allowing space organization for volumes of any size (currently one shelf is stacked above another but the system is complete and functional).
Technical Sheet:
• Height: 175 cm
• Width: 140 cm
• Depth: 50 cm
• Material: Fine solid walnut wood
• Craftsmanship: Guglielmo Cau e Fratelli (Cagliari)
