Description from the seller
Napoleon III Folding Screen, Golden Wood, late 19th century – France
Extraordinary three-panel Napoleon III / Rococo screen, late 19th century, made in France. The structure, in carved and gilded wood, presents a tripartite composition articulated by hinges. Of these panels, it is the central body that attains greater hierarchy through a lavishly ornamented crest, at whose axis an oval medallion with a figurative scene of gallant or pastoral character is inserted, framed by rich decoration of scrollwork, garlands, and vegetal elements inspired by Rococo.
The side leaves replicate, with light simplification, the ornamental scheme of the central panel. However, at the top of each leaf there are small bevelled mirrors arranged in a grid. The lower area features a damask fabric.
This piece shows a clear scenographic intent; it not only fulfills a practical function as a space divider but also acts as an autonomous ornamental object. The lavish decoration, the use of gilding, the incorporation of mirrors, and the reference to eighteenth-century repertoires respond to the historicist taste of the French Second Empire, where luxury and theater become signs of social distinction.
